Freedom is a sociological concept and without society the word has no meaning. Liberty is often used as an alternative to freedom. It is a Latin word incorporated into English via French.

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/liberty

liberty (plural liberties)

1. The condition of being free from control or restrictions.
2. The condition of being free from imprisonment, slavery or forced labour.
3. The condition of being free to act, believe or express oneself as one chooses.
4. Freedom from excess government control.

Did you notice the role that society & government play in the definition?!
